Looking Back

By Johnny Davenport, THPA Historian

I want to let everyone know how honored I am to be your Historian.

For my first article, I want to cover some on Jerry Babb. I will have at least one more article on her.

The first time I found Jerry Babb of Del Rio mentioned in any Ringer, she won the Women's Class at the '77 Del Rio Open, played of course, at Del Rio, Texas.

According to tournament results in the following Ringers, she never lost a tournament 'til August 1980 - at which time, the Lakeside Club at San Antonio started handicapping Women and Juniors. She placed fourth in this tournament, the Tom Haslett Open, which was handicapped.

By the way, Jerry's ringer percentage at the Del Rio Open in 1977 was 17%. Jerry also won her first of ten State Titles that year, at Arlington, Texas.

The May/June '77 Ringer was the first to print the Women's ringer percentage. Fran Duhon of Grapeland was tops at 19%, and Jerry Babb was second at 16% - that was the last time that Jerry did not have the top Women's average in the State 'til ? - at least thru October 1983 - that's when these Ringers I'm looking thru, run out. She has a 55.8% at this time!

 Year  Location  W-L  %  Notes
 1977  Arlington
 1978  Grapeland  6-0  36.7%  July 15,16
 1979  Arlington    27.5%  July 14, 15
 1980  San Antonio  6-1  44.1%  Oct 18,19
 1981    8-0  44.8%
 1982
 1983    7-0  52.9%
 1984    5-0  51.1%
 1985  Arlington  6-0  56.3%
 1986  East Bernard  7-0  54.4%

Jerry was from Del Rio, Texas. In 1987, at Lubbock, in a three-way tie for the State Championship, Jerry beat Mary Zander in the first playoff game. She lost to Dot Crane in the second playoff game - that ended Jerry's string of ten straight State Championships.

Jerry was inducted into the Texas Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 1983.

'til next time...
