October 25, 1913 - January 7, 2008

The THPA recently lost a great person and a former leader of our organization - Joe Sullins of Houston, Texas.

Joe was instrumental in establishing horseshoe courts in Bear Creek Park in Houston.  He was one of the founders of The Greater Houston Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  Joe served the THPA as an officer for many years.  He first served as 1st V.P. in 1983.  He then served four years (1984-1987) as President of the THPA.  He then served the next three years (1988-1990) as our Treasurer.

Joe was also recognized by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association for his work in Horseshoes.  The following is taken from our Sept.1985 Ringer:
"At the 1985 World Singles Tournament, in LaFayette, Indiana, Joe Sullins was awarded the 1985 Appreciation Award.  He was recognized as the outstanding worker for the year, in recruitment of people, and new clubs."

At the time of his death, Joe was the oldest retired police officer in Houston.

In 1986 Joe became the twelfth person to be inducted into the Texas Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame.
